Hobie 16 Dyneema Trap lines
Hobie has approved Dyneema trap lines for class racing as of 2016.
Advantages:weight, easier to see damage, no sharp edges or exposed wires, and they are much easier to cut in an emergency situation.
Cons: Longevity and cost. Normal trap lines should last anywhere from 5-10 years where as Dyneema rigging’s life span is 3-5 years.
Another advantage is they are much easier to customize. We can make them any length and the length can be adjusted after they have been assembled. We are making these trap lines about 4” shorter than our wire lines to account for some of the settling in the splices.
Our trap lines are made using Robline Ocean 3000 XG 4mm Dyneema which has maximum working load of 3590lbs. We chose this line because it has great UV resistance and extremely low stretch.
Dyneema vs Spectra. Dyneema and Spectra are virtually the same thing. They are different brands using that use Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene fibers to make virtually identical lines. The main difference is that Dyneema is made by DSM and Spectra is made by Honeywell.
